At least five people have died and 27 have been injured after the partial collapse of a 10-storey building in Abadan, southern Iran.
Emergency teams are trying to rescue some 80 people who they estimate are still trapped in the rubble.
The collapse occurred at noon in the southern city of Abadan, when the 10-storey building partially collapsed for reasons still unknown.
The complex was under construction and has collapsed during a sandstorm.
The head of the Red Crescent Rescue Organization, Mehdi Valipour, has stated that “Probably 80 people are trapped in the rubble.”
Through Twitter, the organization has assured that it has already rescued more than 30 people.
More fatalities are expected to be found in the rubble.
The building is located in one of the busiest shopping streets in the cityaccording to local media, and the collapse has caused extensive damage to nearby cars and buildings.
The head of Abadan’s emergency services, Nader Naghibi, has stated that more fatalities are expected to be found under the rubble and that there is a high risk due to the instability of neighboring buildings.
Emergency services estimate that there are around 80 people trapped under the rubble.

Valipour has indicated that rescue teams have been dispatched from nearby towns, as well as sniffer dogs, machinery and ambulances, which work against the clock to remove those trapped from the rubble.
The president of Iran, Ebrahim Raisí, has ordered the mobilization of all state resources in the rescue tasks and that the city of Tehran send firefighters with experience in this type of disaster.
An investigation into the collapse of the building has been opened, and its owner and the contractor who built it have been arrested, state television has reported.
The incident is reminiscent of a building collapse in Tehran in 2017, which caused 20 deaths, including 16 firefighters who were buried while carrying out rescue work.
