Rio de Janeiro’s carnival has returned to the streets after two years of silence due to restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The parades, considered one of the biggest attractions in Brazilhave begun just after the country’s Minister of Health, Marcelo Queiroga, repealed the February 2020 decree by which the Government declared a state of health emergency.
With a parade, in which one of its historical “carnivalesques” has been honored, the award-winning Imperatriz Leopoldinense began at 10:00 p.m. local time on Friday (1:00 GMT this Saturday) at two nights of performances this year from samba schools of the first division of Rio de Janeiro.
The 12 schools of the Special Group, each with some 4,000 musicians and dancers in costume and displaying gigantic floats, will have a minimum of 65 minutes to traverse the 700-meter sambodrome. The presentations have also coincided with the drop in the average number of deaths from COVID in Brazil to 93 a day, its lowest level in more than two years. Brazil has been, however, one of the countries hardest hit in the world by the virus, as it accumulates up to 30.3 million infections and more than 600,000 deaths.

The sambódromo has been closed since February 2020
The sambodrome has been closed to the Special Group schools since February 25, 2020, when the last parade concluded. The crisis forced the Rio mayor’s office to cancel the 2021 carnivalsomething that had never happened before since this Brazilian city organized its first official carnival ball in 1840. On two occasions the party was postponed (1892 and 1912) but the authorities never came to cancel it, not even when the country faced the Spanish flu pandemic (1919).
The 2022 carnival was also canceled in Januarywhen the omicron variant caused a third wave of the pandemic in Brazil with record numbers of infections. Later, the mayor’s office took a step back and, anticipating that the health emergency would be over, announced that the samba schools would parade in April, two months behind the usual date.
Despite the fact that the municipality only authorized the parades in the sambodromo, where access can be limited only to people who present their vaccination certificate, since last Thursday twenty blocos (comparsas) have taken to the streets to make “clandestine” presentations. The mayor’s office refrained from clamping down on this week’s parades because the principals and mayors, who draw large crowds, have vowed not to show up this year.
