The media have dealt extensively with the issue of sustainable energy and the energy transition and in the pages of The vanguard we can see that my colleague Professor Mariano Marzo shows that this is a very complex issue. Enric Juliana has highlighted gas-geostrategic issues associated with the change in position of the Spanish Government regarding the Sahara and its repercussion regarding the arrival and price of Algerian gas and relations with Morocco, while the correspondents of The vanguard They have reviewed issues of such substance as France’s confirmation of its commitment to nuclear energy or Angela Merkel’s mistake in thinking that Germany should do without such energy, increasing its dependence on Russian gas. These geostrategic issues were discussed at a recent meeting of the Olof Palme Foundation at the S’Agaró hotel.

The war in Ukraine has brought to the fore Europe’s dependence on supplies from Russia, the impact on intra-European cohesion and the inflation that is caused by the mismatches between supply and demand as a result of the pandemic slowing down investments by interrupting the chains of value that globalization had brought.

Catalonia can fall into a serious energy precariousness

The current crisis in Ukraine, the brutal outbreak of the pandemic in China with the closure of factories and the declaration by OPEC that without the supply of Russian oil, black gold could reach 300 dollars a barrel, has led to a downward revision of growth prospects advanced by the International Monetary Fund.

For all these reasons, it is surprising that Minister Teresa Jordá, head of the Department of Climate Action, Food and Rural Action, has expressed her desire to close the Catalan nuclear power plants in 2027 in accordance with the 2017 Canvi Climàtic law, but against the pact between the electricity companies and the Central Government and against the forecasts for the closure of the Catalan nuclear power plants of Ascó I (2030), Ascó II (2032) and Vandellòs (2035), which contribute more than 50% of the demand for electricity in Catalonia .

It is good to think about how important it is to move towards a more habitable world, but in the Catalan case, we must bear in mind that with environmental groups blocking wind projects for disfiguring the landscape and photovoltaic plans for invading the fields and without nuclear we can fall into a serious energy precariousness that has even given rise to some comic “notes from nature” by JLMartín.

Reality shows that the old ecological slogan of “Nuclear, no thanks” has passed into history and that until we find new alternative energy possibilities, realism regarding nuclear is imposed.

It is difficult to understand that in this complicated energy trance that has so much influence on high inflation, the Generalitat makes such forceful anti-nuclear statements.
