Hard crossing of accusations in the UN between the United States and Russia

If the Security Council is useful for anything, it is for the countries to tell each other everything without blood flowing into the river, even if the matter sounds worse than bad.

In the great house of global diplomacy, the United States and Russia yesterday acted as enemies as in the most difficult moments at the cost of the crisis in Ukraine, while President Joe Biden warned of “swift and severe sanctions” in the event of an invasion .

The US ambassador, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, amplified in the United Nations Organization (UN) the complaint that Russia has sent more than 100,000 soldiers to the border with that former USSR country, “the largest deployment since World War II ”. He described it as a clear threat to international peace and security.

“What would it mean if ancient empires were given license to start claiming territory by force? This marks a very dangerous path”, he remarked.

But Russia’s chief of mission Vasily Nebenzya countered that the US is “stirring up the hysteria” of a war in Ukraine, saying this had brought “real Nazis” to Kiev and now wanted to “become heroes to these peoples who fought alongside Hitler”.

He insisted that the United States itself “is causing the escalation” of this situation with “the false claim” that Moscow is preparing to invade Ukraine. “You are waiting for this to happen as if you wanted the words to become reality,” he denounced.

According to the Russian ambassador, the deployment of troops is carried out “within our territory as on so many occasions”. This served him to talk about American hypocrisy, which has 700 military bases in the world and 165,000 military deployed, 60,000 in Europe.

His sharp response came after Thomas-Greenfield accused Russia, and its disinformation work, of trying to portray Ukraine and Western countries, without any evidence, as the aggressors to justify an attack.

Thomas-Greenfield reiterated that Moscow, in its struggle for Ukraine not to enter NATO or have the Western umbrella, “threatens to take military action if its demands are not heard.”

“If there is an invasion, “none of us will be able to say that we did not see it coming and the consequences will be horrible,” he said.

Washington saw in the Security Council a great sounding board. Parallel to this meeting, President Joe Biden issued a statement in support of the meeting. “We have made clear to the international community the full implication that this threat poses, not only to Ukraine, but also to nations and the modern international order,” he stressed.

“If Russia is honest and resolves our security concerns through dialogue, the US and its allies will continue to be engaged in good faith. If it chooses to move outside of diplomacy and attack Ukraine, Russia will face swift and severe consequences,” he promised.

The day already started with a scuffle over the call of the Security Council. Thomas-Greenfield argued that, after many private meetings, it needed to come out into the open. This meant a clear challenge to position. Nebenzya replied that this rally was meaningless and that it only responded to the use of “the public address system of diplomacy” for “a public relations operation by the United States.”

Nebenzya lost in the vote that decided whether or not to proceed with the debate. Of the fifteen members of the security council, there were ten votes in favor, three abstentions and only one support for Russia, that of China. “There are countries that predict a war, but Russia has said that it is not going to launch a military operation. What is the basis of these countries to insist that there will be war?”, raised the Chinese ambassador, the only one clearly aligned with Moscow’s theses.

Although not part of the Council, the Ukrainian ambassador, Sergiy Kyslysya, was also given a voice. He denounced the Russian advance and its aggressions. Before he began to speak, Putin’s emissary walked out.
