The former president of Somalia between 2012 and 2017, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, has been re-elected to the post in a country that has been at war for more than 30 years. Due to the unstable situation, members of the upper and lower legislative chambers elected the president in a secret ballot inside a tent in a hangar at the Halane military camp airport, protected by peacekeepers from the African Union.
In the first round of voting, there were 36 candidates, of which only 4 passed to the second. With no candidate winning at least two-thirds of the 328 ballot papers, the vote moved to a third round with Mohamud winning by a simple majority. Due to insecurity in the country, these elections have not had the popular vote.
Mohamud’s election puts an end to an electoral process that had raised political tensions
Mohamud’s election has ended a protracted electoral process that had heightened political tensions – and raised insecurity concerns – after President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed’s term expired in February 2021 without a successor.
Mohamed and Mohamud sat next to each other yesterday, calmly watching as the ballots were counted. Finally, celebratory shots rang out in various parts of Mogadishu as, after the count, it became clear that Mohamud had defeated the man who had replaced him five years earlier.

Somalia is considered a failed state as it cannot guarantee its population’s access to basic services. Plunged into civil war for more than 30 years, many Somalis doubt that progress and stability will take root in the country despite the election of a new president. On the other hand, the Horn of Africa is suffering the worst drought in the last forty years, a threat to which is added that of the terrorist group Al Shabaab that operates in the country.
The UN warned last month that around 350,000 boys and girls could lose their lives in this African country due to hunger and scarcity if preventive measures are not taken. The war in Ukraine also affects Somalia -totally dependent on Russian wheat-, a challenge that Hassan Sheikh Mohamud will have to face in this new mandate.
