former US president George W. Bush has had a lapse and has confused the 2003 invasion of Iraq, perpetrated by the United States under his mandate, with the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
In a speech at the George W. Bush Institute of Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, the former president spoke about the political situation in Russia and the lack of internal democracy. “Russian elections are rigged. Political opponents are jailed or removed from the electoral process. The result is the absence of checks and balances in Russia and one man’s decision to launch a totally unwarranted and brutal invasion of Iraq… I mean, Ukraine“.
After correcting, Bush excused himself with his age, “75 years”eliciting laughter from the audience.
The United States invaded Iraq in 2003 without the backing of the UN or international law, with the justification, which was later proven false, that it harbored weapons of mass destruction. In addition to thousands of deaths and the destruction of infrastructure, the war caused the rise of jihadist groups in the country, such as the Islamic State.
