Two years and almost three months after the explosion of one of the Iqoxe reactors, the worst petrochemical accident in Tarragona, the company assures that it has not been able to elucidate what caused the accident, with three deaths and a serious affectation outside the polygon south. “What we do know is that the causes are unknown, no failure has been identified in our technical or human protocols,” said Javier de Benito, general director. “I don’t see myself qualified to explain how a plate could reach three kilometers from here, I don’t know,” added José M. Segura, director of the plant.
With the case still in the criminal investigation phase, with two managers under investigation, the company’s managers yesterday opened the rebuilt factory to the media for the first time, already in full production. Among the security improvements, Iqoxe has bunkered two control rooms and isolated their backups. The copies would have been key to investigating what happened, but the shock wave destroyed them.
