The leadership of Alberto Núñez Feijóo cannot mean returning to the PP that lost the government in June 2018. Nor to the story that accompanied the presidency that Pablo Casado won a month later. Feijóo must try another project. Take advantage of the previous ones and propose a party model that is in tune with a country that has changed a lot in four years. The Galician will not be tempted to reset what has happened since Mariano Rajoy was censored and Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría defeated, after winning the primaries, by the sum of those who did not want to see her at the head of the PP. There is no doubt that he shares deep affinities with both. It is even very likely that, if Santamaría had not presented himself as a candidate, he would have done so with a proposal and a candidacy that would not have differed much from hers.

Feijóo will not return to what was the PP that died in 2018. Nor will he endorse what arose on his ashes. Among other things, because the party under the leadership of Casado lost its ability to differentiate itself from its main opponent: Vox. Cs disappeared due to his mistakes and demerits, Feijóo must undertake his own project to update the ruling party that was the PP in the past. An update that cannot resurrect what it was four years ago, when he had a sufficient majority to govern and the polls predicted continuity.

What will Feijóo’s project be like then? Similar to how he is: predictable, pragmatic, realistic and moderate. The first, because Feijóo does not know how to improvise and avoids bold blows. The second, because he despises dogmatism and orthodoxy. The third, because being reflective, he does not become absorbed in his thoughts, since he looks for ideas to land in reality and translate into it. And the last thing, because his ways are always calm and lead him to avoid conflict. Why do I insist on Feijóo’s character to understand what project he has? Because his approach to politics does not come from the hand of ideas but of character. Something that brings him closer to Rajoy and distances him from Aznar or Casado. He has always shown a vital harmony with the former, forged like him and so many others in the PP in the discreet lineage of the serene and tolerant conservatism of José Manuel Romay, the best and deepest theoretician of the party.

Feijóo’s approach to politics based on character is his asset. Above all because the skin of politics today requires the experience of life and the understanding of seeing it stressed everywhere by extremely complex emotions and feelings. A terrain fertilized by populism and that explains the dislocations and polarization of this time, in which the budding leader of the PP will have to find his niche. How will he do it? Invoking the moderation and good sense that years give when they are not yet heavy and can give wings if the energy to move them is not lacking. Moderation is no longer ideological, but is based on the ability to empathize, tolerate and be hospitable. A political capital to be exploited for some parties that live on the rubble of the ideologies of the past: those that were collapsing due to the earthquakes of a 21st century that have put them to such a test that they have ended up demolishing them. Feijóo’s PP project will be different and will not be able to return to 2018. It will rebuild centrality and moderation, but it will do so with other members, with other people and with a society that is no longer what it was four years ago.
