Mataró suffers about fifty housing occupations every month

“We need more mossos to deal with the occupations, we must intensify the investigation and fight against the networks that promote them.” This is how the mayor of Mataró, David Bote, summed up the request that he sent to the Minister of the Interior of the Generalitat, Joan Ignasi Elena, who on Friday presided over the Local Security Board of the Mataró City Council. During 2021, 573 cases of illegal occupations and 192 attempted usurpations have been registered in the capital of Maresme.

The increase in registered cases related to illegal occupations of homes, according to the Mataró Town Hall, is due to the prioritization that the Local Police makes against this type of crime, as well as a greater involvement and collaboration of the neighbors who put them in knowledge of the police. In addition, based on the protocol that allows the City Council to decree the inability of properties due to irregularities, damages or deficiencies that affect health and safety, during the past year 11 administrative interventions were carried out that allowed the eviction of 50 properties.

The Local Police of Mataró evicts an occupied premises

The Mataró City Council has repeatedly called for greater involvement of the competent institutions in the fight against illegal usurpations and has demanded that the legislation be changed, the networks behind some occupations be investigated and special courts be created for these cases. The Minister of the Interior, Joan Ignasi Elena, has promised to transfer this problem to the General Prosecutor’s Office of Catalonia in order to improve and unify the criteria for police action. Likewise, the Generalitat will intensify the lines of investigation that the Mossos d’Esquadra are already carrying out to combat and deactivate the organized groups behind some occupations.

In relation to the state of security in the city, the data for the year 2021 indicates that crimes have decreased by 12.6%, thus, from the 9,157 crimes registered in the year 2019 it has gone down to 8,006 in 2021. The comparison of the data is made with those registered in 2019 given that in 2020, due to the pandemic and confinement, the figures are not comparable. Regarding road safety, the accident rate has increased compared to 2019. It has gone from 360 accidents in 2019 to 385 last year, which represents an increase of 6.9%. This increase is explained by the increase in accidents involving Personal Mobility Vehicles (PMVs) such as electric scooters, which have increased considerably in recent years, from three accidents recorded in 2019 to 55 in 2021.

Complaint against a squatters profile

Parallel to the police fight against illegal occupations, the Mataró City Council has also sued an Instagram profile ‘Okupas de Mataró’ where those responsible for this page advise those interested on the procedure to carry out and complete the usurpation of homes empty and even offer to carry out the occupation themselves.

On the other hand, the government of Mataró will initiate contacts with the General Council of the Judiciary to try to make the capital of Maresme the seat of a specialized court to deal with the issue of occupations “as was done in its day with the preferential ones,” they argue. . In parallel, they have asked the Bar Association for help to support their request.
